I’m The Best Man

Here comes the bride. Here comes the bride.

I’m part of the wedding. Actually, I’m in the wedding. No, I’m not getting married. I’m the best man. My buddy is the one getting married.

Am I crazy to be a little nervous? I’ve never been in a wedding party before. Which means I’ve never been a best man before. I have a speech and responsibilities. I’m not nervous because I think I’m going to mess something up. More because I want everything to be perfect for them. Their wedding got postponed twice because of the global pandemic. It’s time that they finally get married!

The speech

I haven’t written my speech yet. But, I thought this might be a good place to start. Here are some of my initial thoughts for the speech (For this I will call my friends Jeff and Sara)

“Thank you everyone for coming to Jeff and Sara’s wedding. I know that this is a really special day for them. I’ve known Jeff for a long time. The first time I can remember him is freshman year of high school. Believe it or not, I actually can’t remember becoming friends with him. When I look back on it now, we have always been friends. My point here is that I’ve been around before Jeff met Sara. I’ve been around when Jeff started dating Sara. And now, I’m around when Jeff married Sara. Trust me when I say, Jeff is a much better person because of you Sara. You make him so happy. I want to personally thank you for putting up with him for this long. Jeff you did a great job. Sara is beautiful, caring, intelligent, and more. Make sure to hold on to her. I’m not going to talk your ear off. Everyone please raise your glass, Jeff and Sara thank you for allowing us to be here on your special day, cheers to Jeff and Sara congratulations!”

That speech is more than I thought I had. Actually, I wrote a majority of that during the draft process for this story. Let me know what you think about it.

Best Man Responsibilities

Do you want honesty? I’m 24-years-old and I’ve never been a best man. I’ve never been in a wedding party. This is all new to me. A majority of what I’m doing/planning is coming from romantic comedies I’ve seen over the years. Yes, I know that life isn’t a romantic comedy. However, these two deserve at least one day like that.

Because I’ve never done this before, I have no idea what I’m doing. I know my main responsibility is to make sure that Jeff walks down the aisle. I’ve known him for a long time. This is something he wants to do. Besides that, my only goal is to make sure that everyone is having a good time. I’ve told Jeff this weekend is his. Whatever he wants to do, I’m in. I just hope we don’t have to commit a crime.

Open Bar

The two words everyone wants to hear. OPEN BAR. Both the rehearsal dinner and the wedding have open bars. I don’t say this because I’m a heavy drinker. This is more to indicate that the wedding will be a great time. An open bar means that everyone is going to have a lot of fun. When there is an open bar, everything else matters a little less. People drink more and they care less. Hopefully, no one gets too drunk.

I’m excited to see the signature cocktails from my friends. Honestly, that is one of my favorite things about weddings. The signature cocktails are awesome. Most of the time they are cool colors and fun. If I know anything about Jeff and Sara, the signature cocktails are going to be delicious.

I’m not entirely sure how to be the best man. But I know that I’m going to try. I want this to be the special day that both of them have always wanted. The best thing I can do is be there, be helpful, and smile. I’m not so nervous to be the best man anymore.
